According to the annual report from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, there were a total of 97 skyscrapers completed in 2014 that were over 200 meters tall, making it the "tallest year ever."

The Council published a thorough report and infographic that lists the statistics from the record breaking year and compares it to previous years. The 97 buildings now stand in 19 countries, 60% of them were erected in China, One World Trade Center was the tallest, and both South America and Japan saw the completion of their first "supertall" buildings, projects that are over 300-meters tall.

Experts are calling it a "skyscraper surge" and say that we are "almost certainly seeing a post-recessionary recovery." We've already seen the New York City skyline altered by luxury condos, and there are projects in development that will dramatically change the city and others around the world in the the near future.

According to Dezeen, the trend will continue in 2015, and we could see the record smashed by the end of the year.
