Long an established, groundbreaking, and sometimes even controversial New York institution, The Whitney Museum of American Art represents a phenomenon the city knows well—change. As it prepares its grand re-opening, a move from uptown to downtown (945 Madison Avenue to 99 Gansevoort Street), it comes with the exhibition, "America Is Hard to See," which explores "the themes, ideas, beliefs, visions, and passions that have preoccupied and galvanized American artists over the past 150 years."

Last Friday night, the art world came together to celebrate the Whitney's May 1st public opening with a party sponsored by Max Mara and DJ sets by Zoe Kravitz, St. Vincent, and Harley Viera-Newton. Guests got a chance to see the exhibition a tad early and admire the stunning new building. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the museum has numerous floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies from which to see the city from the outside in and vice versa.

With the High Line and Chelsea galleries nearby, the new Whitney Museum is in a prime location. Visit starting May 1, 2015.
