During its early stages, streetwear was pretty easy to define: It was an irreverent approach to casual dressing that had roots in youth-oriented subcultures, such as hip-hop, punk, and action sports. However, over the past few decades, its definition has become increasingly fuzzy, leading many people to wonder: What actually makes streetwear streetwear? How did it evolve over time? And what factors led to the genre’s transformation?

In effort to get a better understanding of streetwear’s current state, Capsule teamed up with Project Cobalt to assemble a panel of taste-makers during New York Fashion Week: Men’s. They called the event “Defining The New Progressive.”

Moderated by Bloomingdale’s Josh Peskowitz, the group was comprised of Darren Skey of Harvey Nichols, Eugene Tong of Details, Rasmus Storm of Storm Copenhagen, Jeff Carvalho of Highsnobiety, and Complex’s deputy style editor, Jian DeLeon.

Though the event was invite-only, Capsule and Project Cobalt just released a recap video of the panel discussion, highlighting some of the most interesting points.
