Throughout most of its run, Jun Takahashi’s JohnUNDERCOVER line was barely distinguishable from his main brand, UNDERCOVER. The prices were essentially the same, as were the style elements: You had relaxed layering, dark colors, and a generous use of prints and patterns. It almost made you wonder what the purpose of the diffusion line was. They were so similar, Takahashi could have easily combined each brand’s seasonal collections into one giant release.

But for Spring/Summer 2016, we see that JohnUNDERCOVER has come into its own—presenting a refreshing aesthetic that compliments UNDERCOVER while simultaneously standing on its own.

As we can see from the latest lookbook, the upcoming range is much less severe than the previous outputs. The colors are lighter and more understated, and the use of patterns has been taken down a few notches, resulting in a laid-back minimal look. But make no mistake, people, the designs still maintain the original spirit of UNDERCOVER; it’s just executed in a mellow manner.

Outerwear, button-ups, pants, and crew necks feature signature details like paneling, frayed hems, and over-sized fits. The selection of headgear and sneakers is also a nice compliment to the streetwear-workwear vibe Takahashi has become famous for.

Take a look at the Spring/Summer 2016 lookbook below. And be sure to keep your eye out for the collection’s official release at stores like Ssense and Haven.
