A 9-year-old's campaign to "Make America great again" won't be continuing at his elementary school. The third grader in California was banned from wearing a hat emblazoned with the Donald Trump slogan after the accessory was deemed a "safety concern" by the administration.
Logan Autry, an avid Donald Trump supporter, was asked to remove the hat after it started to cause "negative emotions" from his fellow students. The third grader was reportedly being confronted at recess by students who said the probable Republican nominee was "stupid," according to The Los Angeles Times.
"The vice principal came up to me and told me to take my hat off because it brings negative attention from other students," Autry told ABC 30. But he reportedly refused to take it off.
“It’s my favorite hat,” Logan told CBS 6. “The First Amendment says I can wear my hat.”
Autry skipped school to attend a Trump rally last month, where he purchased the crimson hat. Trump began selling the cap with his trademark slogan last July as part of his campaign merch.
“I’ve told them his policies on illegal immigration, and our second amendment, and our first amendment and all of our amendments that need to be protected which are not going to be an amendment at all if Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders gets elected,” Autry told ABC 30.
The Fresno School District later issued a statement explaining their decision to ban the hat. "Our job as educators is to facilitate a safe learning environment where we encourage robust conversations of diverse and thoughts. We are proud that in this case, our school achieved that goal by allowing the student to wear his hat for several days," it read. "However, it is also our responsibility to take precautions when the discourse begins to impact our school climate and interrupt school operations."
"I still want to keep my hat. It's not the hat that draws attention, it's just my personality that the other children do not like," Autry, who hopes to one day be a politician, said to ABC 30. He also shared that he likes to practice his speeches on the playground.
Since Autry's story went public, he was able to meet the presidential hopeful and have him sign the hat. But, unfortunately for Autry, he won't be keeping it after all. Fox News is reporting that the cap has since been destroyed by his family dog.
Fresno Unified School District did not immediately reply to Complex's request for comment.
